KANCHEEPURAM: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Monday launched the Rs.280.50-crore Anna Renaissance Scheme for town panchayats (ARSTP) at Mamallapuram in Kancheepuram district.
The Chief Minister said basic infrastructure facilities would be created in all the 561 town panchayats in the State under the scheme.
In the first phase, a total of 140 town panchayats would be covered during this financial year. Explaining the salient features of the scheme, Mr. Karunanidhi said it would be apt to call this sculpture town “mamallapuram” rather than “mahabalipuram.”
Tamil scholars would also agree with the suggestion made by him, he said.
Lauding the Kancheepuram district administration for executing infrastructure development works under the All Village Anna Renaissance Scheme at Kunnapattu village in Tiruporur block, the Chief Minister said the perfection with which the works were executed at Kunnapattu had made him think whether his native village Thirukuvalai in Tiruvarur district could also be made a perfect village with all basic infrastructure facilities.
Local Administration and Rural Development Minister M.K. Stalin expressed confidence that the ARSTP would bring a drastic change in appearance and availability of basic facilities in town panchayats as several of them were tourist centres.
Mr. Stalin hailed the participation of AIADMK town panchayat chairman, P.A. Yashwantrao, in the government function as an historic event.
“To my knowledge none of the elected representatives from the AIADMK had ever participated in the government functions in the recent past.” Chief Secretary L.K. Tripathy expressed hope that the scheme would help reduce overcrowding in cities and major towns in the State.
