Bangalore: With the Supreme Court coming to its rescue by vacating a stay granted by the Karnataka High Court, the State Election Commission on Tuesday announced elections to urban local bodies in the State on September 28. Announcing the fresh election date for the third time since April, State Election Commissioner M.R. Hegde said that barring for six local bodies, the elections would be held to 4,998 wards covering 208 municipal bodies. He said that the model code of conduct had come into effect from Tuesday and neither any policy decisions nor new programme could be announced by the State Government till the election process was over. Mr. Hegde said that he was unhappy over the developments during the last few months ever since he initiated the process of conducting elections to the urban local bodies after the expiry of their term. Elections to the six local bodies — the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the town panchayats of Saligrama and Mulki in Udupi district, Wadi in Gulbarga district and Saragur in Mysore district and Jog Kargal in Shimoga district — will not be held for technical reasons. Asked when the elections to the BBMP would be held, he said it would be done immediately after the two-judge bench headed by the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court delivered its judgment on the petition filed by the Commission.
