BHUBANESWAR: The Union Ministry of Tourism has selected Bhubaneswar as one of the four places in the country to implement its newly initiated shopping tourism scheme. Shilparamam near Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh, Noida (UP)and Aurangabad in Maharashtra are the other three destinations that would be the venues for these mega fairs that primarily aim at attracting foreign tourists. Sources in the State Tourism Directorate here informed that Bhubaneswar was preferred for implementation of the Ministry’s ambitious programme for its growing attraction as a city of tradition and modernity for the domestic and foreign tourists. Its unique combination of temple architecture, cultural activities, rich handlooms and handicrafts combined with the modern amenities has made it a tourist-friendly city, the officials claimed. Introduction of shopping tourism here would boost immense trade opportunities for Orissa’s art and crafts products as more number of tourists from abroad will arrive here to shop ethnic products, they observed. As part of its public-private-partnership drive, the Centre would share 25 per cent of the investment with private entrepreneurs. Respective State Governments would also be invited to invest in the projects, it was learnt.
