Successful group: Winners of various categories at the State senior badminton championship in Pudukottai.
PUDUKOTTAI: Hosting big tournaments featuring quality players could be the ideal way to promote a sport in the district. And the State senior badminton championship, which concluded here on Sunday, is a step in that direction. The five-day tournament, jointly conducted by the Pudukottai District Badminton Association and JJ College of Arts and Science, attracted participation from all over the State. Team championship was conducted on the opening two days and the Chennai shuttlers won both the men’s and women’s titles pretty comfortably. The Pudukottai women’s team reached the semi-finals, a creditable performance. The remaining three days had on store singles and doubles event. Apart from the men’s and women’s events, the veteran category also saw enthusiastic participation. Siddharth Jain and Amrin Mubarak, both from Chennai, won the men’s and women’s titles respectively. Watching them play should have been a great experience for the budding players in Pudukottai district. Interestingly, the doubles event turned out to be a crowd puller. The players kept the rallies going and some good retrieval evoked thunderous applause. “Badminton is fast catching up in the district, with more youngsters evincing interest in the sport in recent times. Participating in such tournaments will give them exposure and increase confidence,” says the tournament’s organising secretary, SP. Senthi. The Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests, S. Regupathy gave away the prizes in the presence of the District Collector, S.J. Chiru and Principal, JJ College of Arts and Science, J. Parasuraman.
