WB expert praises ‘adda leaves’ project

Kakinada: World Bank expert Grant Mille during his visit to the common facility centre at Tallapalem in Seethapalli section of Sudikonda range in the agency area on Tuesday appreciated the Adda leaves and leaf plates project ‘Aditya Vanajevani’ launched under the AP community forest management project funded by World Bank. He interacted with Vana Samrakshana Samithi (VSS) members on the utility of income-generating project that has transformed their lives. Along with District Forest Officer B. Ananda Mohan, Forest Range Officer M.V. Prasada Rao, additional CCF B. Somasekhara Reddy, CCF R.G. Kalghaji and Conservator of Forests N. Prathipkumar, the World Bank expert visited training centres on collection of adda leaves, bundling, curing and stitching in Maredumilli area.

Groups formed

Mr. Ananda Mohan explained Mr. Grant Mille, the task leader, that 16 common enterprise groups were formed with the involvement of 211 VSS tribal members from 15 VSS and Aditya Vanjevani was created with these groups. A sum of Rs.3.20 lakhs from the AP community forest management project was provided to it towards revolving fund. He said these funds were utilised for purchase of adda leaves, auto rickshaw for procurement of raw leaf in VSS villages, transportation of adda leaf plates to the market places and also for building facility for trading and storage of raw adda leaves and plates. He said the project had proved a success in transforming the lives of tribals in providing them the subsidiary income generation activity in the lean period and leisure time, thereby putting an end to the migration to other places to eke out a living.
