According to a release from D. Baskaran, head of the training centre, the scheme has been sanctioned by the District Collector for the development of an alternative animal fodder for the benefit of sugarcane farmers engaged in dairy farming in order to reduce the cost of milk production as well as augment the availability of green fodder, viz., sugarcane tops, throughout the year.

Main objective

Dr. Baskaran said that the main objective of the scheme was to train and motivate farmers to adopt the technology. The project involves three levels of training programmes. At the first level, cane officers, agricultural development officers and veterinary assistant surgeons will be trained.

The technology is developed by the Professor of the Department of Animal Nutrition, Madras Veterinary College, funded by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development. He will be one of the resource persons at the training programme.
