Fishermen’s appeal on Den Den

Staff Correspondent

The Eritrean ship lies off the Thannirbhavi coast

MANGALORE: The Akhila Karnataka Fishermen’s Parishad, Boloor, here has urged Deputy Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao not to permit the agency concerned to strip the Eritrean ship mv Den Den, which capsized off the Thannirbhavi co ast near here on June 23. In a memorandum, the parishad said this would have far reaching consequences on the local environment in general and marine life in particular.

Parishad general secretary Vasudev Boloor warned the district administration that his organisation would resort to agitation if the authorities gave permission to break the ship down off the coast.

Stating that the local fishermen community has expressed its apprehension over the issue, Mr. Boloor said people who attempted this activity in Thannirbhavi in the past had to shift elsewhere owing to opposition from the locals.

There is no doubt that this potentially hazardous and environment polluting activity would have disastrous consequences on the local fishing industry, which is grappling with the problem of dwindling fish catch each passing year. This is likely to harm the interests of the local fishermen. The administration should not permit this hazardous activity , he said.
