KARUR: Avoid chemical-coated Vinayakar idols for poojas and immerse the idols only in designated places in the district in connection with the Vinayakar Chaturthi celebrations, Collector T.N. Venkatesh has urged the public and organisations involved in organising pooja pandals in Karur district.
Addressing a meeting of officials, Mr. Venkatesh pointed out that the responsibility of peaceful conduct of the celebrations lay equally with the organisers, officials and the public.
The organisers should ensure that they put up pandals in non-controversial places, avoid chemical-coated idols as they pollute water bodies, adhere to identified routes for immersion procession and finally immerse the idols only at designated places in the district. Mr. Venkatesh has urged the public to immerse the idols at Thavuttupalayam, Vangal, Nerur and Mayanur and Kadambar Koil bathing ghat (Kulithalai), all on the banks of Cauvery as also at Rajapuram near Aravakurichi on the banks of Amaravathy. Police and revenue officials should ensure that the organisers stick to the prescribed route, avoid sensitive localities during procession or immersion, and ensure that the people were not put to any hardship, the Collector said. Traffic should be properly monitored and regulated, he added.
Superintendent of Police K. Shanmugavel, District Revenue Officer Jawahar Shanthakumar, RDOs A. Shanmugam (Karur), Pitchammal (Kulithalai), DSPs E.M. Swaminathan (Karur), Bhaskaran (Kulithalai) and Shivakumar (Aravakurichi), and municipal commissioners were among those who participated in the meeting.
