Concern over ‘neglect’ of Kodagu

Staff Correspondent

Madikeri: In a sudden and startling move on Tuesday, several organisations threatened to stake claim for statehood to Kodagu on the grounds that the district had been neglected by the Governments since Kodagu’s merger with Mysore State.

The signatories to the statement issued include representatives from the Kodagu Hakku Samrakshana Samiti, the Bane Hakku Rakshana Samiti, the Kodagu Growers Federation, the Nalnad Farmers Association and the Cauvery Sene.

They said that if Kodagu had not been merged with the Mysore State in 1956 it would have remained a model State. It was unfortunate that due to certain selfish elements, Kodagu’s interests were sacrificed. Except for the then Chief Minister from Coorg (Kodagu) C.M. Poonacha, who rose to become the Railway Minister and later occupied the Governor’s post, nothing had happened to Kodagu, they said.

Kodagu was being looked upon as a rain-bearing region to supply Cauvery waters to Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. Officials of the Forests and Revenue departments were “harassing” the people through various controversial circulars. Prima facie, it appeared that Kodagu had become a target of intrigue, they alleged.
