Subsidy announced for arecanut

BANGALORE: Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister B.S. Yediyurappa on Tuesday granted a subsidy of Rs. 10 for a kg of arecanut.

Arecanut growers in the Malnad belt were in the grip of problems following pest attack on the crop. As per reports, nearly 50 per cent of the crop has been wiped out following pest attack.

The Deputy Chief Minister on Tuesday chaired a meeting of representatives of arecanut growers and traders and elected representatives and Ministers from the districts where arecanut is grown.

Mr. Yediyurappa told presspersons that the Government would provide additional support to arecanut growers, if needed.

Meanwhile, a team of agricultural scientists would be asked to carry out a study on the pest attack and submit a report for the Government to take action.
