Bangalore: The 4,000-odd Urdu schools in the State now have better facilities than they did a decade ago, with more classrooms and improved infrastructure. But teachers in these schools find themselves in a Catch-22 situation. Dwindling strength of children has led to a cut in the number of teachers, and staff scarcity has taken a toll on student enrolment. “There are seven private schools in the area. Most parents send their children to these schools. This is one of the main reasons for the poor strength at almost all the Urdu and Tamil Government schools,” said Azeez Unnisa, headmistress, Government Urdu School, Palace Guttahalli. Until recently, the government school was functioning out of two rooms at the Government Kannada Primary School, Palace Guttahalli. “Later the Government constructed a new building for the Urdu school. We have good infrastructure but still the strength is low,” she said. She also said that the teacher-student ratio is poor in the school. “The other problem is that for more then 125 children, there are only five teachers, including me,” she said.
