Endosulfan claims boy’s life

Kasaragod: A four-year-old boy succumbed to a mysterious disease, suspected to have been caused by the spraying of Endosulfan pesticide, official sources said on Tuesday.

Sa-adath, son of Abdul Khader, a resident of Bandichal near Chattamchal here, had been undergoing treatment for abnormal growth of head since he was three months old.

He was operated upon at a hospital in Mangalore.

The family, from a poor economic background, was advised to go for another surgery to save the boy. Several voluntary organisations reportedly came forward to help them.

But the boy died on Monday while returning home from the hospital.

The family was staying near the State-owned cashew plantation corporation estate where the pesticide was widely used before its spraying was suspended following widespread protests from the public.

Hundreds of people, mostly children, are still undergoing treatment at various hosp itals in the district for this disease. —PTI
