Corrections and clarifications

The ninth paragraph in an AFP report “Gene variation influences height” (“Newscape” page, September 3, 2007) was: “After comparing this discovery to further studies of nearly 30,000 other people, the team believe around a quarter of white Europeans carry the double ‘C’ variant, thus leaving them about a centimetre (0.4 inch) shorter than their double ‘C’ counterparts.” It should have been “After comparing this discovery to further studies of nearly 30,000 other people, the team believe around a quarter of white Europeans carry the double ‘C’ variant. Around a quarter have the double ‘T’ version, thus leaving them about a centimetre (0 .4 inch) shorter than their double ‘C’ counterparts.”

A pointer in the infobox accompanying a report “Apollo Health Street acquires U.S. BPO” (“Business” page, August 31, 2007) said “SBI, Barclays structure debt”, while the text stated that the Bank of India and Barclays Capital had structured the debt for Rs. 550 crore. The pointer was incorrect. It is the Bank of India.

The heading of a report was “Freeze on construction near IAF station [Tambaram] soon” (Chennai city, September 2, 2007, page 4). It was an error. It should have been “Defreeze on construction near IAF station soon”.

A pointer in the infobox accompanying a report “Common calendar for schools is salutary and must: [Madras High] court” (Tamil Nadu, August 30, 2007, page 8) was: “It will be chaotic if all schools are allowed to have their own list of holidays: petitioner”. It was an error. It should have been “It will be chaotic if all schools are allowed to have their own list of holidays: respondent”. The Director of School Education was the respondent .

In a snooker report “Anda Zhang registers upset win” (“Sport”, August 31, 2007), it was said that Moh ran up a 4-0 lead. It should have been Zhang (China) ran up a 4-0 lead. The report was on the Vascon-Manisha IBSF World Under-21 snooker championship at Goa.

A report “A champion in the making” (“Sport”, Karnataka, August 31, 2007) said that 10-year-old Girish Arun Koushik (and not Girish Arun Kosuhik as was published) is the first Karnataka player to earn the FIDE master norm. A reader disputed this saying there were players like Sudhakar Babu (though he represented Tamil Nadu and Karnataka) who had done it earlier. The Sports Desk clarifies that how Girish is the first player from Karnataka to achieve the FIDE Master norm is as follows. Players who have made the grade are awarded the norm only on making an application to the FIDE. Sudhakar Babu and D. Prasad may hold the more prestigious IM title but they are not holders of the FIDE Master norm.
