Majuli Development Authority set up

Special Correspondent

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday announced the constitution of a Majuli Development Authority and earmarked Rs 100 crore for it for undertaking development works in the erosion hit river-island Majuli — Assam’s cultural capital.

Mr. Gogoi made this announcement after inspecting the erosion-hit Bhogpur, Bengenaati and Chumoimari areas of the river island, a large tract of which has been eroded by the river Brahmaputra forcing 27 tribal families belonging to the Mishing tribe to take shelter on embankments. The Majuli Road which connects Kamalabari town of the river island with Bongaon is on the verge of being breached by the river Brahmaputra which is now flowing only 5-10 metre away from the road. The Majuli Suraksha Samanyaya Mancha, a platform of different organisations and parties including the ruling Congress and opposition political parties floated on August 5, submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister demanding rehabilitation of the erosion hit families and distribution of free ration to them for at least two months. The Mancha also demanded immediate measures to check erosion and permanent measures to protect the river island from the fury of the river Brahmaputra, said its Secretary Umakanta Rajkhowa.
