On the warpath: Government Ayurvedic doctors staging a dharna in front of the office of the Chief District Medical Officer in Berhampur on Tuesday. —
BERHAMPUR: Members of the Ganjam unit of Orissa Ayurvedic Doctors’ Association demonstrated in front of the office of the Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) in the city demanding appointment of Ayurvedic doctors under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM). R. Gantayat, convener of the association, said to alleviate problem of dearth of doctors in rural areas, the State government should start appointing Ayurvedic doctors at every primary health centre and rural hospitals. He said most allopathic doctors were not ready to remain at rural PHCs. This apart, tribals and people living in remote areas had faith in age-old practices of herbal remedies based on Ayurveda. These doctors also protested against the norm of regular renewal of registration of ayurvedic doctors unlike the homeopathic or allopathic doctors, whose registration continued for a lifetime.
