MARIYAMMANAHALLI (BELLARY District): Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has taken strong exception to the reported criticism made by Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly N. Dharam Singh that the coalition Government had not done much for the welfare of women.

Addressing a public meeting here on Tuesday, Mr. Kumaraswamy gave a statistical account of the programmes announced by his Government for the welfare and empowerment of women, including the “Bhagyalakshmi” scheme, enhancement in pension for women, extension of subsidy for dairy activities, pension for Devadasis and their rehabilitation, and said that it was unfortunate that such unnecessary comments were made by a senior politician.

Achievements

Mr. Kumaraswamy also dwelt at length on the achievements of his Government especially in the field of education, highlighting the setting up of medical and engineering colleges for the benefit of meritorious students and the starting of degree colleges, high schools and primary schools.

The Chief Minister set in motion the Dananayakanakere Lift Irrigation Project and other schemes, besides distributing Ashraya house “pattas” to the physically challenged and Devadasis including financial assistance to beneficiaries under various schemes.

Kudligi MLA Anil Lad, who presided over the function, urged the Chief Minister to

chalk out a plan of action to fill up all the tanks in the taluks located along the backwaters of the Tungabhadra reservoir. Surpur MLA Narasimha Nayak, chairman of the Bellary District Central Cooperative Bank M.P. Ravindranath, and president of the Janata Dal (Secular) district unit Gulagi Nagaraj were present. Earlier, Mr. Kumaraswamy received memoranda and petitions from the people at Pothalkatta village
