Winner takes it all: Youths taking part in the event at Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple in Dindigul on Tuesday.

DINDIGUL: Temple festivals have been preserving and fostering several traditional art forms and rural sports practiced at villages since time immemorial.

Come Krishna Jayanthi, ‘uriyadi’ (striking pots hung on a tall pole with a stick), has become the centre of attraction of the festival. Besides, special pujas and aradhanas to Lord Krishna were performed at all Vaishnav temples in the district during the festival period.

Sri Srinvasa Perumal Temple near Rockfort organised a show on the temple campus on Tuesday. Several youths took part in ‘uriyadi’ with great enthusiasm. Earlier, the temple officials hung three pots containing butter and cash prizes in a rope hanger tied to a tall pole.

Special pujas were performed to the presiding deity before commencement of the festival. Several youths took part and tried to break the pots. During their attempt, people on the other side pulled the rope back and ‘protected’ the pots. Whenever the participants broke the pot, cash and other prizes fell on the ground to be collected by the winner.

Similar festival was organised at Krishnan Temple at Y.M.R. Patti in the town.

The most popular ‘Uriyadi’ festival will take place at Kadir Narasinghaswamy Temple on Thursday.

Procession

Krishna Jayanthi was performed with religious fervour at several Vaishnav temples in around Dindigul. Sri Gopinathaswamy was taken in procession to several villages through the Reddiyarchatram union as part of the celebrations. Several villages wore a festive look to welcome the Lord.
