Karat to address meet in Nellore today

Staff Reporter

Left parties protest against India’s decision to host the exercise in the Bay of Bengal

Leading from front: CPI leaders leading a party ’jatha’ in Tirupati on Tuesday protesting against the joint naval exercises off the coast of Visakhapatnam by US and other countries.

NELLORE: Gearing up for a major protest against India’s multilateral naval exercise with the United States in the Bay of Bengal, Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Prakash Karat will visit Nellore district on September 5 as part of his five-day jatha (procession) along the East coast.

The major procession led by Mr. Karat, which will be set off from Chennai on September 4, will enter the district the next day.

After addressing a public meeting in Chennai on Tuesday, the jatha will reach Nellore after touching North Chennai, Red Hills, Gummidipundi, Sullurpet and Gudur.

Night halt

The CPI (M) leader will address a public meeting at 5 p.m. on September 5 and subsequently make a night halt at Nellore. On the next day, the jatha will pass through Kavali, Ongole, Chirala and Bapatla before reaching Guntur at 6.30 p.m. on September 6. After addressing a public meeting, he will make a night halt at Guntur on Thursday.

Next morning Mr. Karat will visit Vijayawada, Bandar, Bhimavaram, Narsapuram and finally Kakinada, where he will address a public meeting at 5 p.m. on September 7. After making a night halt at Kakinada on Friday, the procession led by Mr. Karat will pass through Tuni, Anakapalli and finally reach Visakhapatnam at 10.30 a.m. on September 8.

In the meantime, another ‘jatha’ led by CPI general secretary A. B. Bardhan, which will be set off from Kolkata on September 4 will reach the port city on September 8 after touching several places in West Bengal and Orissa besides Srikakulam and Vizianagaram.

Both Mr. Bardhan and Mr. Karat along with other Left leaders will address a public meeting besides organising a massive rally at Visakhapatnam on September 8 at 5 p.m. According to CPI (M) leaders, the party will hold rallies and meetings at several places along the entire East coast besides mobilising people in large numbers to register Left parties’ protest against India’s decision to host the first-ever six-day multination exercise in the Bay of Bengal, which began on September 4 in which warships from the US, Singapore, Japan, Australia and India have been taking part.

It may be recalled that Left parties have been opposing India’s decision to become one of the participating nations in the security operation alleging that it is an attempt to align New Delhi with the other four countries.

And they perceive that the Indo-US nuclear deal as a step to lock in India into the US global strategic designs.
