Officials grilled on security arrangements

Meet held on arrangements for Ganesh immersion, Ramzan

More than 100 CCTV sets required but only 35 have been arranged

MLAs express displeasure on inadequate security in the wake of blasts

HYDERABAD: Congress legislators -- P. Janardhan Reddy and M. Sashidhar Reddy -- on Tuesday grilled officials on security arrangements for the Ganesh immersion and Ramzan slated later this month.

At a meeting convened by Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy to review the security for Ganesh Chaturthi and Ramzan, they expressed resentment at Government’s failure to install closed circuit television (CCTV) sets at important junctions in wake of the twin bomb blasts that rocked the city last month.

Poser to police

Mr. Janardhan Reddy and Mr. Sashidhar Reddy said they quizzed the City Police Commissioner as to how many CCTV sets were required for the two events.

The Commissioner said that more than 100 sets were required and so far 35 had been arranged.

Lack of funds

When officials said that lack of funds was the cause for delay in procuring the remaining sets, the two leaders expressed their displeasure saying that even after the deadly blasts, the Government had failed to learn a lesson.

“When the Government is spending so much on other programmes what prevents it from spending at least Rs. 50,000 on each CCTV set that will enhance the security coverage,” Mr. Sashidhar Reddy said.

Instil confidence

“Kindly take all steps to build the confidence of the people, who are living in fear after the blasts,” Mr. Janardhan Reddy remarked.

They expressed dissatisfaction over Dr. Reddy leaving the meeting midway.
