THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has decided to modernise abattoirs and setup new ones with state-of-the-art facilities. This was decided at a high-level meeting chaired by Local Administration Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty here on Tuesday. The S.K. Mittal committee appointed by the Supreme Court had said that animals were being slaughtered in an unscientific manner in unhygienic conditions in abattoirs in the State. Slaughtering of diseased animals was causing health problems too, the committee had said. The meeting comprised officials of the Pollution Control Board, Animal Husbandry Department, Kerala Agriculture University, Meat Products of India and the Clean Kerala Mission. Those attended the meeting said that lack of space was the main constraint in setting up mega plants in municipal and corporation limits. Hence, it was decided to set up small plants. Inspection of abattoirs would be intensified. Steps would be taken to end unlicensed slaughtering and ensure the quality of meat. Urgent action would be taken to make chicken stalls clean and hygienic.
