SORRY STATE: Gandhari Amman Kovil road in the city is full of potholes. —
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: People in the area around Gandhari Amman Kovil in the Thampanoor ward are on the warpath against the City Corporation’s failure to repair the damaged Gandhari Amman Kovil road that was dug up two years ago for laying water pipes. The narrow road has houses, shops, hotels and office buildings all along the stretch, making it one of the most congested areas in the city. It is also used as a short-cut for vehicles during traffic jams on M.G. Road. Local people allege that the Corporation failed to utilise the repair funds sanctioned by the Government. They complain that despite running from pillar to post, the Corporation has not done anything to repair the road. The heavily-potholed road has become dangerous for vehicles, especially two-wheelers. The road was dug up for the Theerapadham water supply scheme in 2004. The gravel that was laid over the potholes as a stopgap arrangement months ago is strewn all over the road and the side drains. People complain that the dust thrown up by passing vehicles has exposed them to respiratory problems. The monsoon rains only aggravated the condition of the road. Works standing committee chairman K. Rajasekharan Nair said he would look into the issue. A memorandum prepared by the Sree Gandhari Amman Kovil Trust has urged the authorities to resolve the problem. Trust secretary R.P. Nair said the people would be forced to launch an agitation if their plea was not heeded.
