BANGALORE: A 16-year-old SSLC student committed suicide by jumping into a well at Basava Gangothri Ashram on Bangalore-Mysore Road on Monday evening. Alleging that the girl had committed suicide following mental torture by the ashram employees, a group of people on Tuesday staged a demonstration and pelted stones at the ashram building, situated near Kumbalgodu. The police pacified the protesters and dispersed them. The police gave the girl’s name as Asha, a student at Government High School at Gollahalli, off Mysore Road. Asha, a native of Chikkadevanoor in Chikmagalur district, had been living in the ashram for the past two-and-a-half years, the police said. On Sunday, she had reportedly telephoned her mother, Gowramma, and asked her to take her back home as she was unable to withstand the torture by some ashram employees. However, by the time her mother arrived here on Monday night, Asha had committed suicide. It is said that the girl had consumed sleeping pills before throwing herself into the well. On a complaint by Gowramma, the Bidadi police have registered a case. Liquor seized
The Channammanakere Achukattu police on Tuesday seized 288 bottles of spurious liquor, which was being sold under popular brand names. Arrested
The Channamanakere Achukattu police have arrested Ramaiah (45) of Bhuvaneshwarinagar on charges of illegally refilling liquefied petroleum gas from domestic cylinders to automobile cylinders and selling them to auto drivers.
