ILL-FATED: The mangled remains of the mini-lorry that was involved in a head-on collision with a lorry on the Mudichur Road in Tambaram.
TAMBARAM: Three persons were killed in separate road accidents near Tambaram on Tuesday morning. While a woman and her daughter were run over by a speeding bus on the Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road in Maraimalai Nagar, the driver of a mini-lorry was killed after his vehicle collided head-on with a speeding tipper lorry on the Mudichur Road here. In the accident that took place at 4 a.m. on the Mudichur Road, the mini-lorry transporting ceramic tiles from Tiruvannamalai to Chennai and the speeding empty lorry collided. As a result, the front portion of the mini-lorry was severely damaged and its driver Ranjith got trapped inside. Passers-by and residents of the area noticed the accident but were unable to help Ranjith, who cried out for help. The residents informed the police control room. Personnel from the Law and Order and Traffic Wings in Tambaram rushed to the spot. Minutes later, firemen also came to the spot. An earth-moving equipment that was deployed ripped apart the metal body of the mini-lorry and Ranjith was pulled out, nearly an hour after the accident. He was severely injured below the waist. He was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. He had lost blood extensively, police said. Eye-witnesses said that even before he was pulled out of the vehicle, Ranjith was talking to the crowd that had gathered around the vehicles involved in the accident. Traffic police said the driver of the speeding lorry would be arrested on charges of rash and negligent driving. Two killed
On the GST Road in Maraimalai Nagar about 18 km from Tambaram, a woman and her daughter were killed on the spot after they were hit by a speeding bus ferrying employees of a garment export unit. Christina (54) and her daughter Selvarani (30) were residents of Madambakkam near Guduvanchery. They got down at the Potheri railway station and were going to a private hospital where Selvarani was to undergo medical tests for her pregnancy. They were crossing the road near the pedestrian crossing, when the speeding bus hit them, killing the women instantly. The driver of the bus and about 60 staff, most of them women, fled from the accident spot. The Maraimalai Nagar police are searching for the driver. Accident-prone road
Not a day passes without at least a fatal accident on the GST Road, where overspeeding by private and government vehicles goes on unchecked. The improvement work on this National Highway 45 under the Golden Quadrilateral Project has made riding condition better. But residents of localities such as Guduvanchery and the satellite township want effective measures to curb reckless driving.
