Ryots begin transplantation process in Thanjavur district

Growth-oriented: Labourers involved in samba transplantation in Thanjavur district.
THANJAVUR: Samba transplantation has begun in the district.
According to Senthamizh Selvan, Joint Director of Agriculture, Thanjavur district, the process has just started and the crop has been transplanted on 200 hectares.
Farmers started raising the seedlings only from August 10 as water was released late this year from the Mettur dam.
So far farmers have raised nursery on 8,050 hectares which is sufficient to transplant in 80,000 hectares.
The plan is to raise samba on 1.20 lakh hectares this year in the district.
The Agriculture Department has advised farmers to complete raising of nurseries by September 15 and complete transplantation by October 15.
The Joint Director said that 1305 tonnes of samba seeds had been sold by the department, while another 2500 tonnes of seeds have been sold by private parties.
Long-term variety
He said that most of the farmers have gone for long-term variety of CR1009. There was no dearth of fertilisers in the district, Senthamizh Selvan said.
