Post-graduate programme to help students clear IAS examination

Institute of Rural Development and Research to be launched


THANJAVUR: Dissemination of political knowledge will be one of the main aims of Periyar Maniammai University at Vallam near Thanjavur, the Chancellor of the University, K. Veeramani said here on Monday.

He told presspersons that Periyar Maniammai College of Technology for Women, started nearly 20 years ago, has now become a university and will tread a path that is different from other universities, Mr. Veeramani said.

Political knowledge is lacking even among educated in this country. The university plans to impart political education and has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi Institute of Political Education, which has been registered as a trust recently.

Social engineering would be another subject and it will encompass sociology, women empowerment, equal opportunities for all and creation of equitable society. Degree, diploma and certificate courses would be offered in this discipline.

Taking into consideration the falling share of Tamil Nadu students in the Indian Administrative Service, the university has decided to introduce a post-graduate course that would help students to pass out IAS. The syllabus would be prepared to equip students to pass out IAS. There would be provision for students to take duel degrees also. After the University’s working hours, the students can pursue another degree course in the afternoon, Mr. Veeramani said.

An Institute of Rural Development and Research would be launched to take up overall development of 65 villages covered by the university under Provision of Urban Amenities for Rural Areas (PURA), a brain child of Dr.Abdul Kalam. The university has also a plan to start a school of journalism.

Besides introducing courses in Periyar’s ideals, it would offer studies in the concept of social justice.

It would implement social justice by admitting students on the basis of Government reservation. Diploma and certificate courses would be offered in fibre optics and degree courses in nanotechnology. The Vice-Chancellor of the university, N. Ramachandran, said that energy, environment, rural development would be the thrust areas.
