CHENNAI: Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized more than 12 kg of Ketamine Hydrochloride from the premises of a courier company here on Monday.
The seized contraband was valued at Rs.4 lakh in the country and Rs 1.2 crore in the international market. An official release said following specific information, the DRI authorities intercepted two export consignments. They had been declared wooden gift shields and wooden Bible stands. While one consignment was booked in the name of a Madurai-based company, the other was booked by a Chennai-based person and consigned to Taipei, Taiwan.
Examination of one of the consignments revealed a polythene cover containing white granular sugar like substance concealed in the bottom portions of the wooden stand of the shields. The officials seized 7.9 kg of the substance, which was later identified as Ketamine Hydrochloride in powder form.
In the second consignment declared as Bible stands, the contraband, packed in polythene covers, was concealed in the bottom portion. The authorities seized 4.2 kg of the contraband from the second consignment.
Investigations revealed that the Madurai-based company was non-existent and the consignment from Chennai was booked in a bogus name.
