Proposes to hold a model “Students’ Parliament” to raise awareness among the students
NEW DELHI: As part of its manifesto for the Delhi University Students’ Union elections later this week, the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has promised that it will continue to strive for improvement in students’ facilities. The NSUI has assured students that if elected to power, it will continue to pressurise the Delhi University authorities to allow student representation in the Academic Council. The Union also proposes to hold a model “Students’ Parliament” to raise awareness about the functioning of Parliament among the students. The NSUI said it would also urge the authorities to put in place the infrastructure required before launching a new course. This will be done in the light of the abysmally low pass percentage in the B.Sc. (Physical Sciences) course introduced last year. The authorities will also be asked to introduce more short-term and job-oriented courses. If elected, the to the students’ union, the organisation will demand a transparent internal marks assessment system to be put in place, the manifesto states. A greater choice in choosing foundation and application courses in B.A. programmes will also be demanded from the authorities. For the convenience of differently-abled students, the NSUI will ask for ramps to be made compulsory for all floors of colleges and not just at the entrance. To help students who use the Metro railway, feeder services from the metro stations to nearby colleges will be sought. A bus service to link the North Campus, the South Campus, the Kalkaji Campus and the Central Campus will also be sought. Keeping in mind the increased incidence of sexual harassment on the campus, the NSUI will demand that one member of DUSU be made a member of the Committee against Sexual Harassment. The authorities will also be urged to provide a monthly stipend to students who have been admitted through the sports quota. They will also be asked to make available existing sports facilities at stadiums across Delhi to students of Delhi University at nominal rates.
