SFI to move court on nomination issue

Accusing the University administration of ‘mismanagement’

NEW DELHI: Accusing the Delhi University administration of “mismanaging” the upcoming elections to the students’ union, which has led to several posts being left vacant at the college level as well as for the central panel, the Students’ Federation of India has decided to take legal recourse.

The party has announced that it will file a petition in the High Court on Wednesday to appeal against the University’s decision of not allowing re-nomination for certain posts that do not have any contenders.

“As a result of such mala fide mismanagement of the DUSU elections, a situation has been created wherein the DUSU posts of two members of the Central Council from various colleges as well as college union posts have been left vacant. The student community cannot be made to face the brunt of the incompetence and politically motivated conduct of the Chief Election Officer,” the party claimed in a statement on Tuesday.

“Some candidates who had filed nominations based on certain criteria were declared ineligible after the University changed the rules. Later the administration did not allow filing of re-nominations on the basis of the revised criteria, which has left posts in some colleges lying vacant,” said Albeena Shakil, secretary of the SFI Delhi State Committee.

No candidates

“Some colleges like Miranda House have absolutely no candidates who can stand for elections,” she said, adding, “all six posts here are vacant. In some other colleges, some candidates have been elected unopposed.”
