Eight held while campaigning

NEW DELHI: Eight young men from Haryana canvassing for some candidates contesting the upcoming Delhi University Students’ Union polls have been arrested at R.K. Puram here. Three vehicles bearing Haryana registration number plates have also been seized.

During a routine check on Monday, a police team noticed that three vehicles bearing Haryana registration number plates were being used for canvassing on the South Campus. The vehicles were impounded and eight young men were arrested. They were produced in the court of a special executive magistrate who released them on condition that they will report to the R.K. Puram police station every morning and evening till the elections are over. The police also seized five vehicles for violating the model code of conduct for the DUSU elections.

Besides, 12 cases under the West Bengal Defacement Act have been registered by the local police against various election candidates. The University authorities have been informed of the action taken by the police. Earlier, at a meeting with the contestants and college authorities, the police advised the students to abide by the court directions. Extra force and Police Control Room vans have been deployed outside the colleges to ensure an incident-free election campaigning.
