UDF to block roads on September 10

Thiruvananthapuram: The United Democratic Front (UDF) high power committee on Wednesday adopted a two-pronged strategy to highlight the hardship of the people on development issues even while campaigning for the resignations of Ministers involved in land scam and scandals.

At a press conference here, UDF convener P.P. Thankachan said the Opposition front would hold a half-an-hour road blockade on September 10 all over the State in protest against the Government’s failure to carry out road repairs. The road block would be held between 11 and 11.30 a.m. on September 10, covering even panchayat roads.

Mr. Thankachan said the roads be it national highways or panchayat roads had fallen in disrepair and the Government had done nothing to undertake repair work even though several agencies had approached the Government. In Thiruvananthapuram, the blockade would be held at the Bakery Junction and all the UDF MLAs would boycott the Assembly proceedings on that day and participate in the blockade, he said. If the Government failed to open its eyes to the hardship of the people, the front would announce stronger modes of agitations, he said.

Resignations sought

The UDF also demanded the resignations of Forest Minister Benoy Viswom and Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy. Mr. Thankachan said the Merchinston Estate case should be handed over to the CBI. He said the controversial estate owner Xavy Mono Mathew had been nominated to the Kerala Film Development Corporation attesting to his clout with the LDF Ministry. He said since the KPCC president had elaborated on the Ponmudi land deal, he did not want to elaborate the UDF’s stand on this. With regard to the Health Minister’s resignation, Mr. Thankachan said the Chief Minister should hand over to the CBI for investigating the petition submitted by the Kiliroor sex scandal victim Shari’s parents indicting the Minister.
