Poll-eve transfers under scanner

Reports to be sought on the urgency of transfers

Transfer orders of vehicle inspectors sent by fax

BANGALORE: Following large-scale transfer of officials of various departments just before the announcement of polls to urban local bodies, the Lokayukta has decided to seek reports from the Secretaries concerned to explain the necessity and urgency of such transfers.

To a question from The Hindu on what course of action the Lokayukta would adopt in the backdrop of reports of murky transactions accompanying transfers in the Revenue and Transport departments, Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde said he did not have the power to inquire into appointments, transfers or promotions.

He would ask the Secretaries to explain, under the good governance mandate of his office, what made them effect transfers in such a hurried manner. “The Lokayukta has been focussing on good governance to bring in transparency in administration and, under this policy, we could ask the Government how the transfers were made.”

In the case of Inspectors of Motor Vehicles who were telephonically directed to report to their new posts, the transfer orders were sent by fax to the regional transport offices concerned on Wednesday, sources said.

Sources said that the RTOs, under whom the transferred inspectors were working, refused to heed telephonic instructions and said they could relieve the inspectors only on a written order. While many inspectors waited for transfer orders in their new stations, most of them reported for duty on Wednesday.
