Ullas Karanth wins Paul Getty Award

Bangalore: Ullas Karanth, wildlife biologist best known for his prolific research and writing on tigers, has been given the prestigious J. Paul Getty Award for Conservation Leadership for 2007, an annual award conferred to “honour outstanding contributions to international conservation.”
Karnataka-based Dr. Karanth has spent much of his life working on protecting the dwindling tiger population of India, with special focus on the Nagarahole National Park. He is also the director of the Wildlife Conservation Society — India Program, which focuses on wildlife conservation through scientific research, national capacity building, policy interventions and site-based conservation.
The Paul Getty prize includes a cash prize of $200,000 which will be used to establish fellowships to support postgraduate students in conservation-related fields at an institution of the winner’s choice.
