Tarun scalps six

Bangalore: Tarun Muthanna bagged six wickets and helped President’s XI gain a 228-run first innings lead over Tumkur Zone in a KSCA inter-zonal under-19 tournament match here that concluded in a draw.

President’s XI declared at 350 for six in 86 overs and bundled out Tumkur Zone for 122. Later following-on, Tumkur scored 131 for seven in its second innings.

The semifinals will be held here on Thursday and Friday.

The scores:

President’s XI 350 for six decl. in 86 overs drew with Tumkur Zone 122 in 47.5 overs (Tarun Muthanna six for 52) and 131 for seven in 56 overs (Santosh 46).

Mysore Zone 148 in 82.2 overs and 44 for one in 20 overs drew with Bangalore Zone 214 in 70.2 overs (Sanjay Kumar 92, Salauddin four for 58).

Mangalore Zone 133 in 73.4 overs drew with Dharwad Zone 234 in 75.1 overs (Nitin Bhille 128, Vinayak 45, Daniel Sequiera four for 79).

Shimoga Zone 182 in 78 overs and 62 for five in 29 overs drew with Bangalore City 278 in 74.2 overs (Stalin Hoover 118, Rahul Bhatkal 76, Cyril four for 45).

Semifinal line-up: Combined City XI vs Mysore Zone; Bangalore Zone vs President’s XI.

Vijayashankar’s record

M. Vijayashankar of University Evening College, Mysore, with a timing of 15.56s set a new meet record in the men’s 110m hurdles event erasing the previous record of 15.80s set by M.V. Mathai of UCPE, Mysore, in 1985-86 on the inaugural day of the 79th annual Mysore University inter-collegiate athletics meet held in Mysore on Wednesday.

Vijayashankar also won the triple jump gold with a clearance of 14.43m.

The results (winners only): Men: 110m hurdles: Vijayashankar (UEC, Mysore, 15.56s NMR; old record: 15.80s; 200m: Vikas Y Heggade (NDRK, Hassan-23.53s); 800m: Manjunath (Maharaja’s College, 2:02.94s); Javelin: P. Ravindra (Vidoyadaya, T.N. Pura, 49.97m). Triple jump: M. Vijayashankar (UCE, 13.43m); 10,000m: Harish (GFGC, KR Nagar, 36:57.26s); Discus: C. Chandrak umar (PGSC, 34.40m).

Women: 800m: G.L. Sunitha (Marimallappa’s Women’s college, 2:24.09s); 100m: S. Shobha (Teresian College, 13.14s); Hammer: Ranjitha Kumari (PGSC, 18.00m); High jump: Mythri Aralikatti (Teresian College, 1.41mtrs); Shotput: S. Deepa (Teresian College, 9.43m); 110m hurdles: Reshma (PGSC, 20.26s).

Chari’s team wins

Chari’s team from Chennai (Lakshmi Chari, T.T. Chari, J.P. James and C.R. Kumar) won the Malleswaram Association’s open State ranking bridge tournament with 98 Victory Points here.

In the five round Swiss league, Chari’s team tied with the local Jayaseelan’s team, comprising Godwin Jayaseelan, C. Krishna, Saumik Sardar and S. Patnaik, for the top spot.

The former, however, was adjudged winner in a tie-breaker. Rao’s team with 83 points, finished third.

Bangalore teams dominated Chandresh Khanna memorial paired event and took all top four spots with C.M. Kulkarni and K.N. Shyamsundar emerging as the winners with 528.98 points.

Throwball meet

Sportz Village will conduct the ANZ Chairman’s Cup inter-corporate throwball championship for women at the Mount Carmel College grounds in Bangalore on September 22 and 23.
