Baggage scanner installed at Central railway station

Security measure: The baggage scanner at Chennai Central railway station that will be formally commissioned shortly.

CHENNAI: Chennai Central railway station has got a baggage scanner and the equipment, costing Rs 25 lakh, will be put into operation soon, according to Southern Railway officials.

The officials said in view of the increasing terrorist activities in different parts of the country,

Indian Railways decided to strengthen security measures in major railway stations. Installation of X-ray scanning machine was one of the measures.

All major stations in Southern Railway, including Chennai Egmore, would get the scanning machine.

A mobile scanning machine had also been sanctioned for Central station to check the baggage of passengers, sources added.
