Scrap panel on deal: Venkaiah

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The panel formed to look into the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal should be scrapped immediately, the former president of the BJP and Rajya Sabha MP, M. Venkaiah Naidu, told a press conference here on Wednesday.

“Constituting such a panel headed by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee is a ploy by the Congress and the Left to delay a decision on the deal,” Mr. Naidu said. Mr. Mukherjee was already heading nearly 40 Groups of Ministers, he added.

The Congress and the Left were trying to buy time to evolve a face-saving formula through the committee.

The Left parties were adopting a dual approach in their support to the UPA government. “They support it in Delhi, but oppose it in Kolkata,” he said. He asked the Left parties to “either patch up with the UPA government or pack-up [withdraw the support]. Make up your mind quickly on whether you want to patch-up or pack-up.”

The Centre should have formed a joint Parliamentary committee to study the issue, Mr. Naidu said.
