Uphaar: verdict deferred

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The families and relatives of the victims of the Uphaar cinema fire tragedy, who were waiting for the verdict with bated breath, will now have to wait for some more time as the trial court said on Wednesday that it would fix a date for pronouncing the judgment on October 22. The court said it was yet to go through the voluminous documents of the case.

Earlier, the main accused in the case, Sushil Ansal and Gopal Ansal, who were asked to be present by 10 a.m., reached the court around 10-30 a.m. They said they were caught in the rush-hour traffic.

Earlier, the Ansals sought entry into the courtroom through the back door claiming their lives were in danger. However, the Additional Sessions Judge Mamata Sehgal turned down their request.

Neelam Krishnamurthy, convener of the Association of Victims of Uphaar Tragedy , told presspersons that they had waited for justice for more than 10 years and were ready to wait out the next couple of months.

Fifty-nine persons died on the fateful Friday (June 13, 1997) when the fire broke out at the cinema during the screening of the Hind film “Border.” The CBI filed a charge sheet in the case on November 15, 1997.
