A collection explicitly unique

SHOWCASING CREATIVITY: A piece of art on display at the “Vistaar” exhibition.

Presenting a more open vision of the vitality and plurality of contemporary Indian art is a special exhibition, “Vistaar,” that opens at Delhi’s Stainless Art Gallery on September 12.

Showcasing new and unique artistic creations made by artists and designers working in pairs, the exhibition is aimed at taking forward the concept of living arts intrinsic to India as well as cultural and artistic traditions across the world. Its focu s is on collaboration and inclusiveness.

Artists and designers have worked together in varied media and styles dismantling the rigid boundaries, turning their canvases into designs for apparel, furniture and appliances.

The new body of work together with some drawings and other preparatory sketches forms the collection that includes a range of expressions. There is an amazing wall painting in ceramic by legendry Akbar Padamsee and his partner Vineet Kacker. An innovative Mithu Sen together with designer Kumar Kanti Sen has created a sofa that is designed for pleasure and surprise, while designer duo Anamika Khanna and Gunjan Gupta have created a special chest of drawers that can hold your attention.

Bose Krishnamachari pairs with Ezma to see his painting transformed into a very special shawl and Alex Davis with Art D’Inox has created a chandelier in steel that can be turned upside down.

His contemporary Chintan Upadhyaya together with Arjun Khanna makes a fashion statement of sorts by turning an old bike into a unique work of art. Gopika Nath and Murti Ahuja bring art and craft closer together in their embroidered piece framed around in a wood and metal play, while master artist Laxma Goud working with his caster Thomas takes the link further up the scale in his bronze Urli.

Fashion designer Manish Arora and Gagan Vij create an amazing garden umbrella that brings the former’s high sense of design and the latter’s technical skills together. There are precious other pieces of jewels in the exhibition. Paresh Maity’s two evocative works — one in gold and the other in silver — are turned into collectible necklaces by Raj Mahatani.

The exhibition will be open till September 19.
