It was a trip down memory lane for Education Minister M.A. Baby who arrived at the Central Jail at Poojappura on Tuesday for the inauguration of a State-level cultural programme for prisoners organised by the Kerala Sahitya Akademi. Mr. Baby recalled how as a student activist, he was detained in the jail, along with his fellow comrades, for fighting against the Emergency in 1975. “However, even after my friends were released from jail, I was forced to remain in detention at the Iranimuttom hospital owing to an attack of chickenpox,” Mr. Baby recalled. “My fellow comrades came to know about my plight only much later,” he said. “But the jail term did not dampen our enthusiasm for studies, as two of my fellow comrades went on to secure first rank at the university level after coming out from jail,” Mr. Baby told the prisoners, suggesting to them that a prison sentence should not be regarded as an end to one’s social life, but should be looked upon as a beginning for a better future.
