17 cases of leptospirosis reported from Anaikaraipatti village

THENI: Seventeen people at Anaikaraipatti village in Bodi taluk have been affected by leptospirosis, an infectious disease caused by cattle urine, here on Thursday.
The disease was first reported in an area of the village that has a population of 2,500.
The Department of Health Services deputed a team of doctors and paramedical staff, led by Medical Officer of Silamalai Primary Health Centre, to treat the affected.
Preliminary treatment
Preliminary treatment was given to all the affected.
Blood samples of patients had been sent to Madurai for test.
The disease caused by bacteria leptospira that were transmitted from animals to humans. People who were exposed to the urine of animals or with urine-polluted environments might be affected, said health officials.
Symptoms
Mild fever and body pain or renal failure in later stage, were some of the symptoms of the disease, doctors said. Steps have been taken to prevent spread of the disease to other parts of the village, said V. Pandia Raj, Health Inspector, Primary Health Centre at Dombuserry.
Conrol measures
Fogging was being done, larvae-killing solution sprayed on stagnated water, leakage in tanks and pipes plugged and lime and bleaching powder sprinkled on streets as part of control measures, he added.
