Safety norms inculcated in contract labourers: NLC Director

Special Correspondent

NEYVELI: The Neyveli Lignite Corporation has taken up various measures to ensure safety at the worksite for regular employees as well as contract labourers. As part of this endeavour, it has brought out an audio-video programme on safety norms, said V. Sethuraman, Director (Power).

He was delivering the presidential address at the inauguration of Safety Week celebration held at Lignite Hall here on Wednesday. Mr. Sethuraman said the NLC management had introduced dress code for workers at the Thermal Power Station-I project site.

The NLC contractors were adopting different colour schemes for uniforms for easy identification. The management was also conducting refresher courses to the workers to inculcate safety consciousness among themselves.

He said the management would provide fire retardant suits to those employed at the furnaces and other hazardous sites. The new gear would be like the “boiler suit”, and would be a comfortable wear, unlike the ones that were cumbersome and obstructive.

Safety lessons

Mr. Sethuraman said safety had two dimensions: preaching the norms and putting them into practice. In this endeavour, the role of individuals was vital, because it was they who would have to follow the rules. If they did so, it was good for themselves, for their families and for the company, Mr. Sethuraman said.

R. Sundar, Director of Boilers, Government of Tamil Nadu, said the safety gears and accessories were tailor-made to suit a specific purpose, and therefore, it was incumbent on the employees to wear them.

Precautions hailed

He hailed the NLC management for having taken all possible precautions to avert any accident, and despite these, if any accident occurred, it could be owing to non-observance of safety rules.

P. Babu Rao, Director (Personnel) and A. Murugesan, Executive Director (Power) participated. An exposition and cultural events also marked the occasion.
