PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry Vivasaaya Thozhilalar Sangam on Thursday demanded the transfer of a police officer who had allegedly humiliated and abused women agriculture workers at a picketing held at Bahour Thookupaalam in the Union Territory on Wednesday. In a press release here A. Ramamurthi, general secretary of the sangam, said the workers, numbering 100 and mostly women, were demanding old age pension of Rs.750, ID cards, rain coats, mosquito nets, free rice, free colour television sets and steps to activate the agriculture workers welfare society. National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW) State president Vasanthi led the agitation. At that time the local inspector of Police had allegedly beaten the women with lathis. Mr. Ramamurthi said that though women farm workers took part in the protest, the police force did not consist of women constables as the case should be. Enquiry
Condemning the action, he also demanded an enquiry into the incident. The CPI State secretary N. Kalainathan, who flayed the incident, said the party would lodge a complaint with the Puducherry Women’s Commission on the issue.
