NEW DELHI: The investigating officer in the Phoolan Devi murder case on Thursday identified Munni Devi, a key witness, as the sister of the slain Member of Parliament who was shot dead outside her residence here in the Capital on July 25, 2001. Earlier, Additional Sessions Judge V. K. Bansal had issued summons more than once to the investigating officer who was not appearing in the case. At the last hearing, the investigating officer had sought more time on medical grounds. With the prosecution counsel requesting the court to record Munni’s statement at a later date, the Judge fixed September 13 for the same. Munni has claimed that she was present at the Ashok Road residence in New Delhi when Phoolan Devi was shot at the entry gate. The court also directed the Senior Superintendent of Police (Ghaziabad) to explain on September 10 why no security was provided by the police to the witness, who lived in Ghaziabad. The court had earlier asked the Ghaziabad police to provide security to Munni Devi but they had not complied.
