VALPARAI: The Mysore-based Nature Conservation Foundation has opened the Anamalai Nature Information Centre at Iyerpadi, near here, on the Valparai-Pollachi highway, to spread awareness among locals of the need to save the eco-system of Anamalais.
P. Mohan Kumar, Joint Director, UPASI Tea Research Foundation, inaugurated the centre, which is housed in a building provided by Parry Agro Industries Ltd.
The displays and information centre on three major themes: habitats; biodiversity; and conservation issues.
The habitat section gives an introduction to the enchanting natural areas and plantations, now an integral part of the landscape, while the wildlife section focuses on the beautiful and fascinating species of plants and animals, both common and rare. The centre also gives information aplenty on what we can do to conserve the nature and natural resources.
According to the wildlife biologists of the foundation, 40 nature photographers have donated 300 stunning images to the centre. With these images, 60 visually appealing posters have been designed by Pavithra Sankaran. Some of the conservation issues and ecosystem functions will be brought to life through the paintings of Maya Ramaswamy, a reputed wildlife artist, who has collaborated with the foundation under many such initiatives.
Additional touch-and-feel displays, interactive audio (sounds of the forest) displays, educational games and a nature trail through the adjacent rainforest have also been planned.
Library material and educational films about nature will target local schoolchildren.
