Electricity thefts through ‘direct tapping’ detected

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Cases of electricity theft by way of ‘direct tapping’ and ‘meter bypass’ in domestic services at Kavarapet and Ayanavaram were detected during surprise checks conducted recently by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB).

A team of TNEB officials of Chennai/North Enforcement Squad, Chennai Enforcement Division, found that the energy consumption was not getting recorded in the meter because of such methods.

While a provisional assessment amount of Rs.1,00,291 was collected from the consumer at Kavarapet to offset the loss sustained by the TNEB, Rs.1,08,330 was levied as payable amount by the consumer at Ayanavaram, according to a release.

The consumers concerned also came forward to compound the case in lieu of criminal proceedings and remitted a sum of Rs.18,000 each.

Hence, police complaint was not lodged.

The release said that information about energy theft may be given to Executive Engineer (Enforcement) Chennai on 94440 85459.
