Chennai: Construction firm Chinnu and Co has bagged the tender for the Marina beach beautification project on the Napier’s Bridge-Lighthouse stretch.
The Corporation had floated tenders for the second time for the stretch as the first tender received only one bid that was about 40 per cent higher than the project cost estimate. The re-tender received four bids.
Chinnu and Co, a PWD-registered contractor, made the lowest bid, which is 22 per cent higher than the estimate of Rs. 16.92 crore.
The bid would have to be approved by the Corporation Council and the State Government before the contract is awarded.
As part of the beautification project, the Corporation has planned new pathways, service lanes, landscaped lawns and seating space for visitors at the Marina Beach.
The blueprint for this 3-km stretch proposes modification and renovation of the existing parking space, lawns, footpaths and service lanes that lie between Kamarajar Salai and the beach.
The plan does not propose any development on the beach sands.
Encroachment drive
On Wednesday, the Corporation began a drive to remove encroachments on the service lanes.
Most of the vendors were sellers of snacks, toys and knick-knacks on push carts. About 200 vendors had to move their mobile shops.
The drive will continue on Thursday when another 200 vendors are expected to be shifted.
Anna MGR Kadarkarai Manalparappu Siru Vyabarigal Sangam vice-president A. Ramalingam said the vendors near the Anna Memorial were not affected.
Only vendors of mobile shops had been asked to move from the service lane to the area were other shops were located.
