GoM on tribal policy meets

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Group of Ministers (GoM), constituted to ensure the all-round development of the National Tribal Policy 2007, met here to discuss the issues of indigenous people, particularly their diminishing control over forests.

Chaired by Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, the members of the committee discussed suggestions made by various ministries and non-governmental organisations over the policy.

The policy is expected to address the issues such as low Human Development Index (HDI), poor infrastructure, loss of control over natural resources, and threats of eviction and exclusion from mainstream society.

The GoM assumes significance as there is no single policy which looks at the issue of protection and development of the Scheduled Tribes in an integrated manner.

The policy would also identify the ways to make the STs active partners in nation building.

It will facilitate translation of the Constitutional safeguards into reality, with simultaneous socio-economic development.

Union Ministers P. Chidambaram, P.R. Kyndiah, Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, Mani Shankar Aiyar, Meira Kumar, Prithviraj Chauhan, and S. Reghupathy and Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia attended the meeting.
