dated September 7, 1957: Crusade against cancer

The Tele-cobalt plant, a gift partly given by the Atomic Energy of Canada to the Cancer Institute, Adyar, Madras, and the first of its kind to be installed in India was switched on by Dr. A. Lakshmanaswami Mudaliar at the institute premises on September 5. Mr. A.J. John, Governor of Madras, who presided, stressed the need for early diagnosis and treatment of cancer and said the installation of the plant was a great step to combat the disease. Mr. M.A. Manickavelu, Health Minister, paid a tribute to Dr. (Mrs.) Muthulakshmi Reddi’s devoted service to the cause of the suffering and to the pioneering work of the institute in treating many advanced cases of cancer. Dr. P. Arunachalam, Director of the institute, welcomed the gathering. Dr. (Mrs.) Muthulakshmi Reddi made an appeal to the public and to the Government to help the institute further. She wanted the rich people to make research endowments.
