CAVA students relaunch agitation

Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: Students of Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts (CAVA) have resumed their agitation as the reported promise of Minister for Kannada and Culture H.S. Mahadeva Prasad to find a solution to their “unending woes” has not been fulfilled even after two weeks.

The Minister’s promise had persuaded the students to call off their week-long strike. But now that there is no headway in their case, the students have made it clear that they would not budge to any kind of false promises.

The students have decided to boycott classes until their demands are considered favourably.

The students took out a silent procession on Sayyaji Rao Road here on Thursday wearing masks. Instead of shouting slogans or holding placards, they sketched on a banner highlighting their plight, which drew the attention of passers-by.

Despite being one of the prestigious fine art schools in the country, CAVA has several infrastructure bottlenecks. There are eight classrooms for 210 students. The students say the rooms are insufficient to run classes as the fine arts course requires spacious classrooms for practice.

Kuncha Kavya Samskruthika Samithi, students union of CAVA, said the academy lacks a decent gallery to exhibit art.

“This has deprived us to showcase our talent. In addition, the scarcity of faculty (each department has two or three) has affected the academy,” the samithi said.

The academy, which has produced many eminent artists, does not have an entrance of its own. “Despite innumerable promises, our problems have not been solved. Our pleas have not evoked any response. Until our legitimate demands are considered, there is no question of suspending the agitation and attending classes,” the students said.
