Ashok dazzles for Arulanandar College

Madurai: Four goals, including a hat-trick, by Ashok and one by Arputharaj helped Arulanandar College, Karumathur thrash GTN Arts College, Dindigul 5-0 in the ‘C’ zone finals, while a brace each by Rajesh Kannan and Solai Arasu and one by Balaguru helped Sourashtra College trounce Madura College by an identical 5-0 margin in the ‘B’ zone finals of the Madurai Kamaraj University inter-collegiate hockey tournament at Madurai on Thursday.

In the ‘A’ zone finals, trailing by a goal in the first session, American College rallied to beat MSS Wakfboard College 4-2. Parthiban, Sathyaraj, Sankaralingam and Saranraj scored for American. R. Rajesh and R. Fasi Ahmed scored for MSS WB College.

Virudhunagar Hindu Nadar Senthil Kumar Nadar College won the title in the University championship ball badminton tournament with an all-win record in the four-team league at the University ground. Madura College finished runner-up, losing only to VHNSN College. American College finished third with its only win over CPA College, Bodinayackanur.

The results: VHNSN College, Virudhunagar bt Madura College 29-19, 29-6; VHNSN College bt American College 29-27, 29-6; VHNSN College bt CPA College, Bodinayackanur 29-20, 29-11. Madura College bt American College 29-24, 29-20; Madura C ollege bt CPA College 29-18, 29-27. American College bt CPA College 29-20, 29-7.

Two titles for Feroz

M. Feroz of TVS MHSS won two titles — sub junior boys and cadet boys — in the Stag international inter-school table tennis tournament at Madurai on Wednesday.

The results (all finals): Junior: M. Mukund bt M. Feroz 16-14, 11-2, 11-4. Sub junior: M. Feroz bt M. Santhosh (TVS) 11-7, 11-8, 11-9. Cadet boys: M. Feroz bt M. Santhosh 11-8, 7-11, 11-8, 10-12, 1 1-7. Mini cadet: Senthil (TVS) bt Manoj Kumar (St. John’s) 11-6, 11-8, 11-13, 11-7.
Sathyabama posts win

Sathyabama University defeated Jeppiar Engineering College 73-45 to win the A. Krishnasamy Naidu Memorial Rolling Trophy at the State-level basketball tournament here on Thursday.

Sathyabama made a brisk start and took a 19-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. Jeppiar showed signs of improvement in the second session, but still was down 15 points at the half way mark.

Sathyabama cagers continued playing aggressively in the third quarter and secured a 29 point advantage. It was too late for the Jeppiar hoopsters to stage a come back from that point.

The results: Final: Sathyabama 73 (Singmon Augustine 25) bt Jeppiar EC 45 (Sreejith 13, Kevin 10). Third place: Loyola 55 (Vinnimal 16, Madan Raj 16) bt MCC 26. Host Cauvery College defeated TUK Arts College 37-33 and entered the semifinals of the Bharathidasan University inter-collegiate kabaddi tournament for women at Tiruchi on Thursday.

SASTRA advances

SASTRA defeated Ganesh CC by three wickets and booked a place in the quarterfinal of the Indian Air Force Platinum Jubilee cricket tournament at Thanjavur on Thursday.

The scores: Ganesh CC 192 in 35 overs (Raja 52) lost to SASTRA 193 for seven in 34 overs (Gowtham 40).
Handball trials
