THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Thiruvananthapuram District Basketball Association (TDBA) has chalked out a year-long plan to popularise the game among school children, college students and corporate employees with an integrated sports management and marketing approach. Unveiling the ambitious plan at a press conference here on Wednesday night, the TDBA president, Shaji Vettooran, said the various programmes as part of it would get underway with the Alamy basketball carnival for school children on September 9. To be held at the basketball complex at the Central stadium here, the carnival has been so designed by experts to initiate excitement for the game among school children. Competitive fun games
A series of competitive fun games using the basic skills of the game would form part of the carnival. Besides, the day-long event will witness the introduction of street basketball for the first time in the country. This concept of the game, which is gaining popularity in other countries and is known familiarly as ‘Streetball’, will have three players in each team and would played be on a half-court. Over 20 teams, drawn from the various schools in the city, are expected to take part in the new version of the game. A novel attraction of the carnival would be a special dunk by a trained elephant at the time of the inaugural ceremony. As part of its long-term strategy, the TDBA would also be organising another carnival for college students and a basketball tournament for corporate employees. While the carnival for college students was being planned for the second week of January next, the inter-corporate tournament will be held in November this year. A training programme for eight to 10 selected schools would be conducted regularly soon after the carnival for school children until February next. A weekend training school for talented players would also be held during the same period. These apart, the TDBA will also focussing its attention on spreading the game to the rural areas in the district.
